I was farting around the other day with a 90s hiphop tune I’ve always dug, “Tried By 12″ by East Flatbush Project. I was first turned onto it when I was putting on acid-jazz clubs in LA. I believe the person who I heard play it first was Dj Plan 9 who was doing a lot of nice abstract dj work. I had a club called Jazzid Up! that I put on along with Dj Junior Roach, Elson Trinidad and Nickie Black. Plan 9 became friends with me and my collaborators and eventually became a resident at Jazzid Up! and Way Out West (the event Nickie hosted after the demise of Jazzid Up! with myself and Plan 9 on turntables.) The other people who I need to mention who are essential to me conceiving of this particular remix are Djs Markman and Satta (aka Louis Chude-Sokei.) Satta, Junior Roach & Markman were crucial in the development of my appreciation for Drum & Bass/Jungle (aka D&B.) Markman in particular exposed me to the “jump-up” sound in D&B as the crew he was a member of at the time (Presha Crew also featuring Deacon One, Devas and MC Kemst) were one of the leading crews spinning that sound in the 90s. Although I was more into the “jazz jungle” sound at the time I now look back nostalgically on the sound of jump-up–it was straight-up party music! I feel that so much interesting electronic music has lost that feeling of “fun” and so I tried to do my part by making a jump-up remix of “Tried By 12.”
